The SMARTlab Associate Researchers

Clilly Castiglia is an Associate Researcher at the SMARTlab UK and she was involved in the VIP project (Virtual Interactive Puppetry) A system which allows live performers and Virtual Puppets to work and perform remotely and in 3D. Dr Sara Diamond Sara Diamond became President of OCAD in July 2005 after a distinguished career with the Banff Centre, where she eventually served as Director of Research for the entire Centre after creating the renowned Banff New Media Institute in 1995 and serving as Artistic Director of Media and Visual Art.
Dr Brian Duffy has been actively involved in research in many international academic and non-academic institutions throughout Europe in the fields of robotics, artificial intelligence and haptics for over 14 years. Currently, Brian is a Research Engineer at the Institut Eurecom, Sophia Antipolis, France. Dr Jools Gilson-Ellis is a writer, choreographer, performer and installation artist. She is co-director of the performance production company half/angel, founded in 1995 with Richard Povall. Half/angel develops projects involving new technologies, poetic text and performance.
Malcolm Matson is a pioneer of the broadband era.  He founded COLT Telecom, Europe’s first all-fibre public telecoms network and was the first person to articulate the disruptive consequences of abundant bandwidth in a digital world, with the inevitable segregation of ‘infrastructure’ from ‘content’. 

Dr Bakhtiar Mikak is one of the original computer scientists and inventors behind some of the MIT Media Lab’s major projects in the Centre for Bits & Atoms and the Lifelong Kindergarden teams, Dr Bakhtiar Mikhak is a now an independent research scientist and the director of the Grassroots Invention Group (GIG).

Dr Vesna Milanovic received her MA in Dance Studies from  the University of Surrey and her Practice-based Ph.D. from the SMARTlab, in  association with the School of Social Sciences, Media and Cultural Studies,  University of East  London. Jude Ower Jude Ower is founder and owner of Digital 2.0, a Serious Games consultancy. Jude has over 7 years experience within the Serious Games market working at all stages of development. Jude has also recently started her Phd at Smartlab, focusing on developing serious games.

Dr Alexander Pasko is an Honorary Visiting Professor in 3D Design & Animation.

Mark Pedley Mark Pedley is CEO at SmartLife® Technologies. Mark has built and sold a number of businesses over 25 years, has been a mentor for the University of Manchester, is currently a director / chair of a number of companies including, the Chamber of Commerce Northwest who have a reach into 35,000 businesses in the region and has interests in other international sectors.

Dr Marc Price is Senior Engineer/Researcher at BBC R&D, where he specializes
in screen systems for audience empowerment. He is the Co-PI of the BBC MINDtouch research project with SMARTlab.

Neema Rai graduated with a Masters in Law from Durham University. She has worked in the areas of health care, law and journalism and is involved in setting up Octoply, a river service involved in developing transport and the concept of constructive commuting as well as offering alternative venue spaces.
Dr Nithin Rai, a biophysicist who has steadily shifted from drug discovery to discovering the aquatic environment. He is a Director of Octoply Ltd, who design 3D computational models while in the process of setting up a novel type of passenger boat service on the Thames. Sheila Robinson specialises in support for business development, particularly in digital industries. She works internationally as a business advisor, and works with various software and technical systems to deliver best practice business support online and face to face.

Fiddian Warman is an artist/researcher working with SMARTlab in the fields of robotics and performance (also the subject of his practice-based PhD). He is best known internationally as founder and Managing Director of Soda.

Dr Li Zhangis a collaborator on the BBC MINDtouch project with SMARTlab. She currently holds a lectureship at the University of Teeside School of Computing, and was previously a lecturer in the School of Computing and
Technology at UEL.
